A Catalyst for Hope in Benton Harbor

By day, Jay Haynes is the Chaplain for Safety and Security at Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital. His presence in the hospital is a beacon of hope and reconciliation, employing de-escalationPastor Jay HaynesPastor Jay Haynes tactics and often being the voice that steers individuals away from conflict and toward solace.

By night, he is a KPEP volunteer, pastor of 2nd Chance True Gospel Ministries, leader of a men’s outreach group called Restorers of the Breach, and Chaplain for the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, where for 11 years, he has donated his time providing a reassuring presence for individuals in dire circumstances, preventing conflicts, and encouraging peace.

Feeding Bodies and Souls

Pastor Jay connected with KPEP over 15 years ago through his position at the time as director of operations at Habitat for Humanity, where KPEP residents performed community service work. The KPEP program director could soon see positive changes in the men’s lives after they had informal conversations about faith with Pastor Jay.

Now as he approaches his 17th year with KPEP, Pastor Jay reflects, “I remember April 1st, 2008, like it was yesterday. From that day forward, we have hosted a consistent program providing residents with a meal and Bible study.”

Pastor Jay’s program includes a meal and a small group Bible study every other Tuesday night. Most weeks he stays late connecting one-on-one with residents who want to talk through their personal struggles. Outside of his regular program, Pastor Jay throws an annual barbeque for the facility, bringing in David Paul Brook, a Christian rapper and speaker, and providing an elaborate meal for the residents. “We look forward to our annual barbeque every year,” he says.

A Role Model for Transformation

Robyn Sherrick, program manager for the KPEP Berrien County facility, has nothing but amazing things to say about Pastor Jay. “We teach and lead by example for our residents in the community,” she says. “Pastor Jay is the perfect role model for these men, providing fellowship and an opportunity to connect with others in the community.”

Pastor Jay’s goal is to help residents navigate the transition process within KPEP. “I try to always show the residents that a change is possible and encourage them to use their time while in KPEP to begin transforming their lives for the better,” he says.

Nurturing Through Fellowship and Ministry

“Ministry is my passion,” he continues. “I saw a lot of hurting folk in my community, and I knew it was not going to change unless someone rolled up their sleeves and did something about it, so that’s exactly what I did.”

No matter the situation, Pastor Jay is always willing to lend a helping hand. “I am on call 24/7,” says Haynes. “Whether it is someone looking for resources or just needing a listening ear, I will always provide a nonjudgmental space for them to express their feelings.”

Despite his demanding schedule, Pastor Jay remains tirelessly committed. Monday through Thursday, he invests time in training individuals, ensuring the perpetuity of his legacy of compassion and service.

“Sometimes I am exhausted walking into KPEP on Tuesday nights,” he says. “But when I arrive and see the guys ready with their Bibles open on the tables, no matter how tired I was walking in, I am revived by their eagerness.”

Making a Lasting Impact

With weekly average attendance between 20 and 30 residents, over his years at KPEP, Pastor Jay has touched the lives of hundreds of individuals and their families. To this day he maintains contact with many former residents.

His impact is lasting. “Over the course of 15 years, many of the men and fathers across the state of Michigan have come back to visit our ministries,” said Haynes. “It’s amazing to see how far they have come. Several bring their wives and families to meet me, and a few have even brought their children to be baptized.”

Pastor Jay Haynes’ tireless efforts were recognized as he was honored in November 2023 for his exceptional contributions to the city of Benton Harbor. He received the Community Impact award by Present Pillars, a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing fatherhood. Fueled by a profound commitment to faith and community, he continues to plant the seeds for profound change, offering a second chance to those who need it most.
